"You're studying German abroad? Why is that?" - is a common reaction when people tell you that they are studying German language, culture and literature in Germany and Hungary. Despite all the doubters, the binational Master's degree is worthwhile in more ways than one.
Julia Pater and Melanie Henkler, two Master's graduates report on the advantages of the binational degree course:
"A semester abroad is a great experience. You shouldn't miss out on the opportunity to get to know another culture and new people in this way. Not even as a German studies student. This is automatically included in the binational Master's degree course . And the course is also very well organized. Many questions, such as finding accommodation, only arise to a limited extent for students, as those responsible at the universities take care of the general planning. This means you can simply concentrate on your semester abroad and always have someone to talk to if you have any problems. The double degree is a great extra: At the end, you receive certificates from both universities.
The semester abroad in Szeged also gives you an insight into another area of German studies research: in addition to the chairs of linguistics and literature, there is also a chair of Austrian culture and literature at the University of Szeged.
So if you have not only dreamed of the wide world after all, but as a German studies student have actually dared to go abroad, you can be sure of a decisive advantage over those who stayed at home: You get to know the German language and German studies from a new perspective, because in the seminars with your fellow Hungarian students and professors, questions come up that would not even arise at German universities. The new perspective gained by contrasting the languages is enlightening and would certainly not have been the case when studying in Germany."
