Hofgeismar Latin America Talks January 24 - 26, 2025
Latin America's democracies are facing major challenges: A strong state seems necessary for sustainable change. However, economic crises, social polarization, corruption and nepotism are putting pressure on the democratic legitimacy of government.
The (extreme) political right and populism have long been a phenomenon in Latin America. It has recently become even more radicalized with Argentinian President Milei. Politicians and parties on the right are exploiting this dissatisfaction, promoting hate images and cultures of rejection and mobilizing through social media and cultural discourse. Liberal regimes are reaching their limits in regulating political unrest and social tensions and counteracting an anti-democratic right.
The conference will analyse the political, cultural and social consequences of the (de)democratizing developments in Latin America from an interdisciplinary perspective. Together with academics and civil society actors, we will discuss how democratic values, political dialog and inclusive political processes can be strengthened, what significance the developments in Latin America have for Europe and to what extent alternative democratic processes for sustainable development are emerging in the midst of the crisis of democracy.
