Thermal Practice: Architecture before and after Carbon 

Thermal Practice zielt auf eine Umorientierung bekannter Narrativen und Protagonisten der modernen Architekturgeschichte, welche sich nun auf Klima und Kohle/Kohlenstoff als Hauptakteure fokussiert. Feldstudien zu "thermal interior" - als ein Aggregat deutlich designter Räume und als experimenteller Zustand von Politik und Ungerechtigkeit - werden als Beweise herangezogen für eine Architekturgeschichte als Mittel zur klimatischen Anpassungfähigkeit. Andere Konzepte zum Neudenken der Formen von Praxis, Modellen, Methoden und Gewohnheiten werden die kollektive Spekulation zu Architektur nach der Kohle anregen.

Prof. Dr. Daniel Barber ist als Professor für Architektur sowie als Lehrstuhlinhaber der Graduiertenkollegs an der Universität von Pennsylvania tätig. Er ist Autor der Bücher Modern Architecture and Climate: Design before Air Conditioning (Princeton University Press, 2020) und A House in the Sun: Modern Architecture and Solar Energy in the Cold War (Oxford University Press, 2016). Zudem ist Barber der Themenleiter des Environmental Humanities Program der Penn University, Co-Direktor des UPenn/Mellon Seminars Humanities+Urbanism+Design zur Inklusiven Stadt und Mitbegründer der Onlineplattform Current, welche sich mit der Überschneidung von Architektur- und Umweltgeschichte auseinandersetzt. Thermal Practice aims to reposition familiar narratives and protagonists of modern architectural history, now revolving around climate and carbon as organizing figures of thought. Case studies of the thermal interior – as an aggregate of distinct designed spaces and as the experiential condition of politics and inequity – will serve as evidence for a history of architecture as a device of climatic adaptability; other concepts for rethinking forms of practice, models, methods and habits will encourage some collective speculation on architecture after carbon – its contours and principles, its obstacles and opportunities.

Prof. Dr. Daniel Barber is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Chair of the Graduate Group in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design. He is the author of Modern Architecture and Climate: Design before Air Conditioning (Princeton University Press 2020) and A House in the Sun: Modern Architecture and Solar Energy in the Cold War (Oxford University Press, 2016). Barber is also the Topic Director of the Penn Program in the Environmental Humanities, a co-Director of the UPenn/Mellon Humanities+Urbanism+Design seminar on the Inclusive City, and a co-founder of Current, a web platform and publishing collective that focuses on the intersection of architectural and environmental histories.
