This article investigates the adoption gap in mobile payment systems in Italy and China. For the theoretical framing, it considers both drivers and barriers combining the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT2) with innovation resistance theory (IRT). The results show respondents in Italy and China present different behaviors. On the one hand, social influence plays an important role in cultures with high uncertainty avoidance, such as Italy. Further, the tradition barrier is the only significant barrier to the adoption of mobile payment in the investigated framework.
