The article, “Re-examining path dependence in the digital age: The evolution of connected car business models”, authored by René Bohnsack, Hannes Kurtz and André Hanelt, was accepted for publication at the renowned journal Research Policy. The longitudinal multiple case study, contextualized in the automotive industry, investigates how and why the increasing introduction of digital technology into business models affects organizational path dependence. Based on the findings, the study challenges and extends established knowledge on organizational path dependence with regard to key tenets, such as initial conditions and lock-ins, and provides a nuanced perspective on path dependence’s resource- and cognition-based foundations in the digital age.
