Forschungsthema: Evolution des Sehens bei den Panarthropoda
Die Fähigkeit, Licht wahrzunehmen und visuelle Informationen zu verarbeiten, ist im Tierreich weit verbreitet. Dafür sind spezielle Proteine, die Opsine, von entscheidender Bedeutung, da sie die Grundlage für die Signalkaskade zur Informationsübertragung des visuellen Reizes bilden. Um die Evolution dieser Proteine und damit auch die Entstehung des Farbsehens bei den Gliederfüßern (Arthropoda) zu verstehen, untersuche ich die Opsin-Gene bei ihren nächsten Verwandten, den Stummelfüßern (Onychophora) und Bärtierchen (Tardigrada). In Kooperation mit der Lund Vision Group (Universität Lund, Schweden) analysieren wir außerdem mit Hilfe von Verhaltensexperimenten sowie anatomischen und elektrophysiologischen Methoden die visuellen Eigenschaften der Onychophoren-Augen, um Rückschlüsse auf die Evolution des Sehens bei den Panarthropoda (Onychophora + Tardigrada + Arthropoda) ziehen zu können.
