International Conference: “Multiple Competition in Higher Education – and Beyond”, April 4th and 5th, 2024: Further Information

Reports

The 2nd phase of the DFG research group started with a kick-off event in October 2024

The kick-off event for the 2nd phase of our research group took place from 7 to 9 October 2024. This meeting served several purposes. Firstly, We shared information about the current status of the projects that have just been launched, secondly, we welcomed three new projects and sought to exchange ideas with each other, thirdly, we were able to exchange information about methodological projects, data and the comparative cases (as well as opportunities for collaboration) and fourthly, we concretised the planning of our joint activities such as our reading circles, the coming podcast series, and the peer event.

Two DFG research groups met for an interdisciplinary workshop of in Kassel

On April 3 and 4, 2023, a joint event of the DFG research groups "Multiple Competition in the Higher Education System" and "Cooperation and Competition in the Sciences and Humanities" took place at INCHER Kassel. Multiple competition, competition and cooperation as well as competition and corporatism were, for example, topics that were discussed and which concern both research groups. Interesting presentations on these and other topics and on the state of research in both research groups formed the basis for further discussion, which also highlighted prospects for cooperation. A total of eighteen people took part in the interdisciplinary workshop. We look forward to further exchanges

Summer workshop 2022 together with members of the advisory board

The summer workshop of the research group "Multiple Competition in the Higher Education System" took place in Kassel from August 29 to September 1, 2022. Members of the international advisory board joined the researchers from the research group for this workshop. We would like to thank Christine Musselin, Paula Stephan, Maureen McKelvey and Nils Brunsson for their many constructive contributions.
In particular, the status of the projects and research results already achieved were lively discussed, the planning of further research was coordinated, the application for the second funding phase was further conceptualized and the current status of qualification work in the group was presented to and discussed with the international advisory board. This resulted in many suggestions for the upcoming research process.

DFG Research group kickoff event

The research group's kickoff event took place from 4.10. to 7.10.2021. The entire research group met in Kassel to coordinate and discuss various items on the program.
One item on the program was the presentation of the progress made in the individual projects in the first six months of the project. Theoretical approximations, empirical planning and initial presentations and results were discussed here. Another item on the program was to make interdisciplinary approaches to the topic understandable and thus strengthening cross-project collaboration in the research group. Here perspectives from business administration, economics and sociology were presented. Finally, the kickoff event provided a framework for coordinating the empirical surveys to be carried out in the projects and also contributed to better networking in this regard.

International Conferenz „Multiple Competition in Higher Education, and Beyond“ on 4./5. April 2024

On 4 and 5 April 2024, the international conference ‘Multiple Competition in Higher Education, and Beyond’ took place in Kassel, which gave the research group the opportunity to share the results of the first funding phase with international colleagues. More than 80 participants discussed questions of the multiplicity of competition in higher education, provided interesting insights into the positioning, dynamics and consequences of this phenomenon and contributed examples from many different countries. The conference received special input from two keynotes: Prof Dr Christine Musselin (Science Po; Paris) spoke on ‘More competition, new cooperation’, and Prof Dr David Stark, Columbia University, New York on ‘The performance complex.
Co-organiser Tim Seidenschnur (INCHER) on the contributions to the conference: ‘It has become clear how important links and interactions between different competitions are in this context and how interesting it is to follow them empirically’.

Spring Workshop 2023 in Raitenhaslach

From February 27 to March 1, 2023, the research group met in Raitenhaslach at the invitation of the Munich team (Prof. Dr. Hanna Hottenrott, Dr. Thomas Schaper, and Julian Schwierzy). At the Academy Center of the Technical University of Munich, which is located in the former Cistercian monastery of Raitenhaslach, we presented various publication projects and discussed them both critically and constructively within the research group. Representatives of all projects were present. In addition to discussing current research, we presented draft proposals for the application for the 2nd phase of the research group in Raitenhaslach and discussed them with a view to the framework application. We also had the opportunity to get to know the research projects of two new applicants (Prof. Dr. Carolin Häussler and Prof. Dr. Achim Oberg) in more detail. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Hanna Hottenrott and her team once again. The next meeting on the agenda is a network meeting of the DFG research groups "Multiple Competition in the Higher Education System" and "Cooperation and Competition in the Sciences and Humanities" at INCHER at the University of Kassel, which is to take place on April 3rd and 4th.

Spring workshop 2022

At the spring workshop 2022, the status of research in the individual projects was presented and coordinated, as was progress in collaborations on the topics of the research group. The empirical procedure in the projects was discussed and coordinated in order to create synergies. In addition, the interdisciplinary theory development was in the foreground. In addition to empirical research, the systematic development of a theory of multiple competition is also a major goal of our research group.
