Newly Published: U. Teichler (2022): Higher Education – What Else? The Story of a Lifetime.

The founder of higher education research in Germany, Ulrich Teichler, looks back on more than five decades of higher education research. The economic miracle and university expansion, the student movement, experiments and crises of the 1970s, organisational breakdown, reunification, internationalisation, ranking and management cult – all these are historical stages that are reflected in higher education and science. Ulrich Teichler, directly involved, reports with openness and humour, presenting clever analyses.

Certainly, the student protest movement played a role: It made me and many others aware that in-depth knowledge should be available to understand the visible problems of higher education and to generate ideas for improvement. (U. Teichler's answer to the question "Why higher education research")

History of the book

Some years ago, two scholars at INCHER interviewed Ulrich Teichler quite a couple of evenings. This eventually provided the basis of an auto-biographical book: Ulrich Teichler. Hochschulforschung, was sonst? Rückblick auf ein Wissenschaftlerleben. Gespräche mit Anna Kosmützky und Christiane Rittgerott (Higher Education Research - What Else? Retrospect to a Academic Life. Conversations with Anna Kosmützky and Christiane Rittgerott). Opladen: Budrich Academic Press, 2020 (ISBN  978-3-96665-023-6). As some colleagues deplored that text is only accessible for German-speaking colleagues, the author took care for a somewhat modified version in the English language.
