March 2023
The Climate Justice Charter Movement (CJCM) held a significant conference in collaboration with the Emancipatory Futures Studies project at WITS, addressing the climate crisis and systemic challenges in South Africa. The two-day event featured diverse participants, including youth, trade unions, community activists, grassroots organizations, disabled and faith-based communities, and academics
During the conference, four strategic perspective documents were discussed, highlighting the intersectionality of climate challenges, failures in global governance, and the need for trans-political activism. These documents outlined strategies to resist climate apartheid, challenge the ANC-led state, transform South Africa's market democracy, and ensure climate justice in the 2024 national elections.
