From Philosophy Doctoral Student to Content Creator: Professional Biography with Charlotte Suhr

Charlotte Suhr studied philosophy and began a doctorate after completing her master's degree. In preparing for her doctorate, she experienced firsthand that humanities subjects often have little financial support to offer their doctoral students. Additionally, Charlotte's entry into the job market coincided with the onset of the pandemic and the first lockdowns. After graduating with her master's degree in spring 2020, she had to apply for Hartz 4 because the job market was empty. In a year and a half, she wrote over 100 applications and still did not find a job.

In addition to the ongoing application process, Charlotte put a lot of time and energy into her Instagram channel @chaarlottchen. Actually started in 2019 as a (hobby) sports channel, @chaarlottchen evolved into Charlotte's outlet on moral philosophy, feminism, discrimination and social justice. On @chaarlottchen, she combines her scientific approach with her areas of interest and creates something that rarely succeeds in academia: thoroughly researched, but also accessible in terms of language and content, contributions on current social, societal and pop-cultural phenomena. When she noticed that more and more people were showing interest in her texts, she began to turn her former hobby into a profession with a weekly column on Steady. Recently, she has also increasingly published personal articles from a sufferer's perspective on the topic of neurodivergence. In addition, Charlotte also works as a blogger, podcaster, youtuber and speaker and last year re-edited a collection of her columns and self-published it as a book.

On 11.05.2023 she will talk to us about her studies, her time as a PhD student, her application phase and the long road to self-employment. The event will take place online via Zoom.
