Villa Rühl: Renovation begins this spring

The International Center for Higher Education Research (INCHER) is expected to have a new address at the end of 2026 and will move into the listed Villa Rühl. Planning for the renovation and refurbishment is starting now, with the conversion phase due to begin in spring 2025. The total construction costs amount to 6.2 million euros.

The University of Kassel is the owner of Villa Rühl, a property consisting of two historic buildings located at Mönchebergstraße 40 and 42, in the immediate vicinity of the Holländischer Platz campus. The properties from the Wilhelminian era are therefore ideally suited for housing university facilities. After the move, INCHER will be able to hold its own meetings and conferences at the new location and intensify its cooperation with national and international university research institutions. In addition, the international networking and visibility of the research center will be strengthened.

The planning contract for the conversion and renovation work was awarded following a public and Europe-wide tendering process. The extensive planning work will begin this year. Both villas are to be retained in their historical appearance, taking into account and implementing monument preservation requirements. Office space, meeting and conference rooms, WC facilities and kitchenettes, rooms for infrastructure, storage and technical rooms and elevators are planned for the institute's use. The institute's own library and a conference and event hall with its own entrance will be housed in a new two-storey building at the rear of the site. The buildings will be designed to be barrier-free and sustainable.

Founded in 1978, INCHER-Kassel is an interdisciplinary research center that conducts research on issues relating to higher education and studies as well as on topics at the interfaces between higher education and other areas of society. INCHER employs 40 to 45 academic and non-academic staff, doctoral students and a varying number of student assistants.
