Together with over one hundred primary school pupils, the university invites all interested parties to discover mathematics in exciting lectures, experiments and interactive workshops. The Day of Mathematics is aimed in particular at upper secondary school students from the region's grammar schools, their teachers and anyone who is enthusiastic about mathematics. A series of varied presentations will show how mathematics shapes our world. Topics include

  • Deciphering secret messages
  • Combinatorial optimization in chess
  • Modeling epidemics
  • Mathematics for modern medicine: development of a digital twin and its application, e.g. in ophthalmology
  • the purpose of mathematics teaching.

A special highlight is the contribution by the Bayerische Versicherungskammer, which will present the use of mathematics in daily business. In another presentation, interested parties will be taken on an exciting 45-minute journey to infinity - with a safe return to the here and now!

Visitors will receive valuable information about studying mathematics in Kassel and the career opportunities it offers. For example, a former doctoral student provides exciting insights into his career and talks about his current job at one of the world's largest software companies, SAP SE. In the afternoon, you can experiment with chaos, order, chance, modular origami and simulations for modern medicine in the math lab or calculate with colors and try out which works of art can be created using equations.

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., young and old math researchers from primary and secondary schools will be working on exciting tasks and exploring patterns and connections. They will be accompanied by dedicated primary school teaching students who have developed the learning opportunities especially for this event.
