BIOLAB - Transdisciplinary work and research environment for creative and artistic exploration of biological organisms
What is it about?
Central question
At the interface between design and biology, BIOLAB is a working and research environment that offers students at the School of Art and Design Kassel and the University of Kassel the opportunity to engage with living organisms in a creative, artistic and scientific way. Together with partners from the growing network, it offers transdisciplinary teaching and learning events, transformative research and a platform for professional exchange.
The BIOLAB is a space in which creative research takes place. The working environment at the art academy, including a network of designers, architects, biologists and artists, is also available to students. This provides an experimental space in which new working techniques and possibilities with biological materials - fungi, algae, bacteria - can be learned.
In the winter semester 23/24, a transdisciplinary course will take place that focuses on shedding light on the future-oriented potential of mycelium-based developments. These are not only based on renewable, biodegradable raw materials, but also provoke new processes in the context of production and growth.
Each semester, the BIOLAB will offer a compact transdisciplinary teaching and learning program for students from the participating departments. In this way, application horizons and current research questions, the practical examination and issues of sustainability of biological materials can be taught and researched.
