The activities and topics in the counseling sector are very diverse. The focus is on counseling people in a wide variety of life situations (e.g., study counseling at the university, counseling center for addicts, debt counseling, nutrition counseling). However, advice can also be given on services and products (financial advice, management consulting).
There are many self-employed people in this sector, e.g. as trainers or coaches.

In the field of education as a student assistant in advising at universities, e.g. at the Career Service, in the International Office or in student advising. Get to know institutions from the counseling sector through internships. Volunteer in the social sector to gain consulting experience.

To enter management consulting, you need a lot of explicit experience in the field of consulting. Internships and many years of work in different companies are important to get to know different structures.

Requirements for starting a career
Depending on the exact job, the required practical experience varies greatly. First of all, it is advisable to have a precise orientation in the desired field in order to be able to do targeted internships.

In most cases, a non-specific university degree is expected. In general, didactic knowledge and application-oriented expertise must be demonstrated through practical experience. Experience abroad is a mandatory requirement in some areas.

There is hardly any targeted training or course of study for a consulting activity. There are numerous further training and qualification offers of the different directions.

Consulting is at least a part of many different academic jobs, even if the word "consulting" does not appear directly in the job title. Jobs in which contact with customers, users or various departments is part of the work also often have something to do with consulting, regardless of whether it is an institution, authority or company.
