Short bio

Benoit Merle has been an Associate Professor and head of the research group 'Mechanical Behavior of Materials' at the University of Kassel since 2022. Previously, he led the 'Nanomechanics' research group at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). He received his education from École Centrale de Lyon in France (M.Sc. with honors, 2005) and the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), Germany (Ph.D. with honors, 2013). Additionally, he has worked as an engineer at Siemens AG, and as a visiting scholar with Prof. George M. Pharr at Texas A&M University and Prof. Daniel S. Gianola at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

He is currently the Principal Investigator of the EU-funded ERC 'NanoHighSpeed' project, and Chair of the COST 'MecaNano' network.

His current research primarily focuses on nanomechanical testing and nanoindentation, areas in which he has a strong track record.

    Prof. Merle has given numerous invited presentations at conferences such as TMS, DPG, MSE, and ESMC, and has organized symposia at major international conferences including ICMCTF, E-MRS, and TMS. He founded the EU MecaNano network, which now boasts over 350 members. The quality of his work has been recognized with several awards, including those from the German Materials Society (DGM) and the Staedtler Foundation. In 2020, he was awarded the prestigious ERC Starting Grant by the European Research Council.
