Join us - Shape the Future of the Internet with Data-Driven Research

At the Heart of the Internet: Our research group exploring the core infrastructure of a major data center in Frankfurt to drive innovation and resilience in global networks

Are you passionate about understanding and improving the Internet as the largest and most complex distributed system? Join our team at the Distributed Systems Group at the University of Kassel, where we use large-scale Internet measurements to explore and optimize the Internet's architecture, resilience, and security.

About us

Our group focuses on data-driven research to understand and improve the Internet. As part of our work, we operate an Internet Observatory (netray.IO), leveraging active measurements to study critical topics such as Internet security, resilience, and performance. By analyzing the behavior of Autonomous Systems (ASes), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing, and core infrastructure, we contribute to enhancing the stability and robustness of the Internet.

Our projects cover a wide range of research areas, including:

  • Internet Optimization: Collaborating with partners like the DE-CIX Internet Exchange in Frankfurt to develop data-driven methods for routing optimization and latency reduction.
  • Internet Resilience: Exploring the impact of machine learning on network resilience and developing strategies to prevent outages caused by configuration errors or the improper application of ML.
  • Security and Measurements: Using active measurements to detect vulnerabilities, improve protocols, and evaluate Internet performance on a global scale.

We publish our work in top-tier conferences such as ACM IMC or ACM SIGCOMM. Please take a look at our research and publications pages to learn more about our recent research.

Why Work with Us?

As part of our team, you will:

  • Conduct impactful research on Internet architecture, routing, and resilience.
  • Collaborate with leading academic and industry partners on national and international projects.
  • Publish your findings at top conferences and become part of the global Internet research community.
  • Work in an interdisciplinary and supportive environment where you can grow as a researcher.
