The Institute of Social Work emerged from the former Faculty of Social Work (04) at the University of Kassel, which was merged with the Departments of Education, Psychology and Music to form the Faculty of Human Sciences (01) as part of a restructuring process.
The Institute is responsible for one of the few university BA degree courses in Social Work in Germany.
