Project description:

The program 'So Emoji' promotes social and emotional competencies in secondary level 1 (5th and 6th grade). The concept, which has already been evaluated (e.g. Gleim, 2019), offers a way to promote social and emotional competencies in movement. In the process, the children learn, for example, to assess conflict situations, to recognize the arising emotion, and to try out need-oriented alternative actions. Compared to the control group, the participating students developed significantly more positively in the area of understanding emotions. At the University of Kassel (Department of Social Relationships in Schools), student teachers are trained in a project seminar (4 SWS) to implement the program in grades 5 and 6 and thus professionalized in the areas of emotional and social development and psycho-social support. The implementation of the program in schools by students meets needs of schools that have been confronted with an increasing number of emotional and behavioral disorders in students in recent years (Otto et al., 2021; Ravens-Sieberer et al., 2021). Feedback from students, teachers, and school administrators has been positive. In the 2023/24 school year, the evaluation will be supplemented by a pre-post survey of participating students.
