Institute of Mathematics
The Institute of Mathematics offers a consecutive Bachelor's/Master's programme in Mathematics and Technomathematics (from autumn 2020). The mathematics bachelor's programme is characterised by intensive supervision and various support measures to cater for different levels of prior knowledge. Diverse elective options from natural sciences and engineering offer individual accents. In the Master's programme, our students spend a year working on current research in the subject areas. In addition, the institute is responsible for basic mathematical training in the natural sciences and engineering.
Furthermore, the Institute of Mathematics offers teacher education courses in mathematics for the school types primary school, secondary school, grammar school and vocational schools. The teacher education programmes are characterised by coordinated and partially integrated modules between subject-specific science and subject-specific didactics, which enable an intensive combination of these two study elements from the first semester onwards. In addition, there are references between subject didactics and educational science study elements. Kassel thus focuses on a highly topical, innovative and practice-oriented teacher training.
The central research foci of the Institute of Mathematics, which currently has three working groups, are mathematics in current areas of analysis, computer algebra, stochastics and numerics. The special feature of mathematics in Kassel is its computer orientation, which is particularly evident in interdisciplinary projects with the engineering sciences. In the didactics of mathematics, the focus is on subject-related empirical teaching/learning research and on practice-oriented development research.
