  • 1965-1969 studied mathematics at the University of Karlsruhe; 1969 diploma
  • 1969-1972 Research assistant at the University of Karlsruhe under Prof. Heinrich-Wolfgang Leopoldt; 1970 doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. (number theory)
  • 1972-1975 lecturer in mathematics at the Kassel University; 1975-2013 Professor of mathematics didactics at the University of Kassel, retired since then
  • 1984 Rejection of an offer to the University of Dortmund
  • 1985, 1989 and 1994 visiting professor at the University of Linz
  • 1995-2001 First Chairman of the Society for Mathematics Didactics (GDM)
