Dr. Carolina de Castro Bueno

Carolina Bueno is an environmental engineer who completed her undergraduate studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (Brazil). She holds a Master’s degree in Materials Science from the Federal University of São Carlos (Universidade Federal de São Carlos, Brazil), with a specialization in nanotechnology and nanoscience aimed at developing nanobiosensors for monitoring environmental quality in the agricultural sector. She earned her doctorate in Environmental Sciences from the São Paulo State University (Universidade Estadual de São Paulo, Brazil), where her research centered on innovative materials derived from agricultural residues—most notably biochar—and their effects on soil microbiota, including lignolytic fungi and plant growth-promoting bacteria. Her doctoral work explored the potential of these materials to advance sustainable agriculture and enhance soil biodiversity.
As part of her doctoral research, Carolina conducted investigations at the University of Bari (Università degli Studi di Bari, Italy) within the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry. There, she gained hands-on expertise in handling diverse biomass types and biochar, with a particular focus on their interactions with fungi. Additionally, she broadened her international research experience at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (GeoZentrum Nordbayern, Germany), where she examined the dynamics of stable isotopes in natural reservoirs, contributing to a deeper understanding of biogeochemical processes in environmental systems.
In recent years, Carolina has been engaged in a corporate setting, focusing on business transformation, sustainability, research and development, and carbon accounting within the realm of plant sciences.
