Social media, from micro-blogging, image-sharing and social network platforms to messenger services, undeniably have taken on a central role in shaping debates. They are used to distill information and mobilize public opinion. At the same time, they have increasingly been used to spread disinformation, hate speech and propaganda. With the advent of new technologies like generative artificial intelligence (ai), in combination with algorithms designed to enhance digital engagement, it appears that we are heading into a dangerous new age of disinformation. We will discuss how these dynamics apply to social conflicts over agricultural policies and agrarian change. We will look at the German farmers’ protest movement of 2023-24 and discuss the role of media technologies in the context of crisis narratives and digital-driven mobilization.
About the speakers:
Prof. Dr. Christian Stöcker heads the Master's program in Digital Communication at the HAW University of Applied Sciences Hamburg and conducted several research projects that deal with questions of the interaction between digital media technology and the public. He is also known for his column in the German online media outlet Spiegel Online.
Janna Luisa Pieper is an agrarian sociologist, researcher, and Ph.D. candidate at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Her research interests are gender in agriculture and rural areas, sustainable agricultural and food systems, and peasant farming. She has extensively researched the German farmers’ protests of 2023/24.
