Annual Meeting of the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM)

From March 15-19, 2021, the first online GAMM-conference was held "in Kassel". Due to the emerging corona pandemic, the on-site event in spring 2020 was cancelled and moved to the online format in 2021. This presented the organizational team around the local organizers Profes. Detlef Kuhl, Andreas Meister, Andreas Ricoeur and Olaf Wünsch with the challenge of hosting such a major event. The conference secretaries Dr. Stefan Descher and Kevin Watzl took a leading role in the implementation of the project.  Together, they organized the move and update of the previously planned conference to an online conference system and were always available to answer technical and organizational questions from the participants.

During the five days of the event, the 912 participants from 33 nations had the opportunity to compile their individual weekly program from 840 presentations. The conference program included 14 lectures in plenary format, 24 thematic sections, the presentation of eight DFG priority programs, six mini-symposia and three poster sessions. The feedback received was overwhelmingly positive, which the organizers would like to pass on to the 28 technicians (staff and support staff) from around the participating institutes. Without the supervision of the virtual rooms, which was ensured by them, such a smooth process as the participants were able to experience would not have been possible. The team is looking forward to the next GAMM and hopes, despite the success of the online format, to be able to visit it on site.
