A durable bond between asphalt layers is a prerequisite for a long service life of traffic pavements. To achieve a good bond, the use of bitumen emulsion is necessary. Bayrische Bitumen-Chemie GmbH (BABIC) is a medium-sized company that produces bitumen emulsion and uses it to produce the layer bond. According to the current technical regulations, two bitumen emulsions (C40B5-S and C60BP4-S) are prescribed for the production of the layer bond. However, the bitumen emulsions defined there cannot be used safely due to their properties and do not lead to an improvement of the layer bonding. An alternative are performance-optimized bitumen emulsions with suitable properties for the heterogeneous conditions in road construction. Bitumen emulsions should be designed according to requirements and their properties defined in such a way that an improved layer bond is achieved under varying conditions, thus ensuring a durable asphalt pavement. The position of the bitumen emulsions will be investigated by means of computer tomography.
