BiTWerk - Biological transformation of technical materials

BITWERK

From materials technology to architecture and agricultural science: in the BiTWerk research cluster, more than 20 professors from a wide range of disciplines are jointly pursuing a new approach of viewing different materials such as plastic, metal or concrete and their properties as an inseparable unit, starting with the production processes and continuing through to use and recycling. The aim is to establish a fully biologized process chain, increase the efficiency of the materials used and save natural resources at the same time. In this way, our ecological footprint can be significantly reduced both in industry and individually.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Niendorf

We want to completely rethink materials. Nature shows us how natural raw materials are processed, used and reintroduced into the original environmental cycle in a kind of modular system. Our aim is to copy this process and make it work for us. This will enable us to contribute to reducing our ecological footprint.
