This tutorial presents the basic rules for writing scientific papers in English. It focuses on the cultural requirements for writing acceptable and “accepted” technical papers rather than grammar and word choice.  In short, it presents the basic structure of English scientific papers and what information is expected in each section.  The tutorial also describes how to put together a literature review, what information needs to be in an abstract and what type of information is expected in the introduction and conclusion sections of the paper.  In addition, it addresses issues that writers from a German background usually have difficulty with including sentence length, complex clause structures and the ubiquitous use of “aber” that does not carry over to English usage.

At the end of the 60 minute presentation, writing exercises will be distributed for those who want to work more on the recommendations presented in the lectures. Example answers to the writing exercises will also be included.  The tutorial assumes that attendees are already fluent in English, but do not have much practice in writing scientific papers for English journals and conferences.
