New Publication from the DFG research group "Multiple Competition in Higher Education" on the socializing effect of competition

The recently published journal article by Julian Hamann and Kathia Serrano Velarde examines the socialising effects of competition for postdocs, as this group is particularly exposed to the dynamics of academic competition. Based on qualitative interviews with 60 postdocs, the analysis shows the orientations and values that competition conveys to postdocs.

The authors found that postdocs deal with the multitude of expectations arising from different forms of competition by prioritising competition for funding. This is at the expense of activities and tasks that are not organised competitively. This socialising effect of competition should be given greater consideration not only in science, but also in research policy that promotes competition.
