Course: Nanoindentation

Contents

Nanoindentation is a modern advancement of classical hardness testing that allows the mechanical properties of a sample to be characterised with submicrometric resolution. This is particularly relevant for coatings and materials with complex microstructures.
The aim of the lecture is to explain the basics of the methods as well as their most important applications. The contents in detail:

Classical hardness testing

  • Vickers/Rockwell/Brinell

Basics of contact mechanics

  • Sneddon/Hertz

Nanoindentation

  • Experimental set-up of a nanoindenter
  • Oliver-Pharr evaluation method
  • Experimental sources of error
  • Advanced methods for the determination of local mechanical properties
    • Strain rate dependence
    • Yield stress
    • Theoretical strength
    • Scratch resistance
    • Thin films
