Our mission statement

We develop innovative approaches to characterize materials at the micro- and nanoscale. In doing so, we lay the foundation for the high-performance materials of the future.

Our mission statement

Why do materials fail? And how can we design them to better withstand loadings?

At the Chair of Mechanical Behavior of Materials, we seek to answer these fundamental questions - by looking deep inside materials.

Our research focuses on understanding how materials deform under load, from the microscale down to the nanoscale. To do this, we develop and apply cutting-edge experimental techniques such as nanoindentation and high-resolution electron microscopy. These methods allow us to directly observe deformation processes and connect them to material lifetime and performance.

Our expertise is critical wherever materials are pushed to their limits - whether in the automotive and aerospace industries, microelectronics, energy systems, or medical technology.
