Nanomechanical Testing in Materials Research and Development IX conference

With Prof. Merle chairing the poster session and MecaNano training

The Nanomechanical Testing in Materials Research and Development conference is the most important event in the field of nanomechanical research. Held every second year, the conference brings together leading experts to discuss the latest advancements in micro and nanomechanical techniques, in situ testing, thin film mechanics etc.

The ninth edition took place from October 6-11, 2024, in Messina, Italy, and was chaired by our close cooperation partner, Prof. Marco Sebastiani from Roma Tre University. Prof. Benoit Merle was co-organizing the poster sessions alongside PD Dr. Verena Maier-Kiener.

Our research group was well represented at the event. Mona Stoll presented her work on "High strain rate mechanical behavior of materials treated by surface mechanical attrition (SMAT)," while Tahir Abba discussed his research on "Toward high strain rate spherical nanoindentation testing."

Beyond the scientific program, the conference provided an excellent platform to reconnect with long-standing research partners and establish new collaborations. The schedule allowed ample time for engaging scientific discussions between sessions. A particular highlight was the excursion to the historic city of Taormina, which included a visit to the ancient Greek theater.

Ahead of the conference, a workshop for young researchers was organized by COST MecaNano, providing participants with cutting-edge knowledge on nanoindentation and machine learning applications in the field.

In an exciting development, Verena Maier-Kiener was elected as the next chair of the conference. With this, all participants are eagerly looking forward to the next edition of this great event!
