Venue
The Alte Brüderkirche is the oldest High Gothic monument and the second oldest church building still standing in the city of Kassel. Today it is an event location.
Within the Alte Brüderkirche and adjacent Renthof complex, we have a number of spaces available for dining, live music, socialising and discussion.
Nestled in the heart of Kassel, the Alte Brüderkirche stands as a testament to the city's rich history and resilience. Established in 1298 as part of a Carmelite monastery, it is the oldest Gothic monument and the second oldest surviving church in Kassel.
Throughout the centuries, the church has witnessed significant transformations. In 1526, during the Reformation, it transitioned from a Catholic monastery to a Protestant church. From 1685 to 1794, it served as a parish church for the Huguenot community, reflecting Kassel's embrace of diverse cultures and faiths.
The resilience of the Alte Brüderkirche was profoundly tested during World War II. In the devastating bombing raid on October 22-23, 1943, much of Kassel's historic center was destroyed, and the church suffered significant damage. However, the community's dedication led to its restoration, and by October 23, 1955, the church was rededicated, symbolizing hope and renewal amidst adversity.
Today, the Alte Brüderkirche has been repurposed as a vibrant event venue, seamlessly blending its historical essence with contemporary use. Managed in conjunction with the adjacent Renthof hotel, the church now hosts a variety of events, from cultural exhibitions to private gatherings, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in its storied ambiance.
As you step into the Alte Brüderkirche, you're not just entering a building; you're walking through a living chronicle of Kassel's past, where each stone and archway whispers tales of faith, transformation, and enduring spirit.
