Seminar "High Performance Computing
Seminar "High Performance Computing"
Brief description
Developing fast and efficient programs requires knowledge of special software techniques and current systems that are not needed for developing software with other goals. In the seminar "High Performance Computing" the participants will learn about different current techniques in this area and present them in a lecture. As an example, the disadvantages of object-oriented programming with respect to performance will be discussed.
In particular, the participants will practice
- working with scientific, English-language texts
- the familiarization with a scientific field that was previously unknown to them
- different presentation and teaching methods
Participants can propose their own topics. To do so, please send an e-mail to Jens Breitbart (jbreitbart@uni-kassel.de) at least one week before the preliminary meeting, indicating the topic and literature.
Participants
Students from the 5th semester of computer science.
Requirements
Basic knowledge in parallel programming is recommended, but not mandatory.
Techniques for presentation and elaboration
- Rainer Bromme, Riklef Rambow: Improving the oral presentation of papers: An educational goal and at the same time a contribution to the quality of teaching, Das Hochschulwesen, 1993, issue 6, pp. 289-297. online.
- There is a good quick guide to writing scientific papers from the Department of Ecological Agar Science.
- If you want to know more about the topic (especially with regard to a later diploma thesis), you should read the guide to scientific writing from FB6.
- Peter Rechenberg: Technical Writing (not only) for Computer Scientists, Hanser, 2003.
- Justin Zobel: Writing for Computer Science, Springer, 2004.
- Otto Kruse: Keine Angst vor dem leeren Blatt, Campus Verlag, 2002, contains among other things a 15 step guide to writing scientific texts.
