UCL Hybrid Conference, Knowing What Psychoanalysts Do and Doing What Psychoanalysts Know, UCL London, 14-15 June 2024

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to a special day meeting taking place on Saturday 15 June in-person at UCL London, and online via Zoom. In this meeting, we will present an innovative, thought provoking and above all useful theoretical framework for reflecting on everyday clinical work, described in our recently published book Knowing What Psychoanalysts Do and Doing What Psychoanalysts Know.  In the book, we used this framework to discuss sixteen ordinary clinical cases of psychoanalysis as well as cases in the literature.  The conference will explore the following questions in depth:

How do we intuit the 'Unconscious' in a session? What sources of data do experienced clinicians use to do this?  How did Freud or Bion or Green set about the task?

What is transference and countertransference? The new framework introduces transference conceived as "cinema”, "theater”, “dramatic monologue” and “immersive theater” to bring clearer thinking to these often hazy concepts to explore and compare how we work.

How do unconscious ideas and impulses create a patient’s troubles?   And how, specifically, do psychoanalysts make a difference compared to other professionals?

The nine authors of “Knowing What Psychoanalysts do…” will elaborate and discuss these questions during a whole day meeting designed to create plenty of space for in depth discussion and debate. The evening before there will be clinical seminars putting the new way of thinking into practice.
