The social inequalities and not infrequently precarious forms of statehood in Latin America have led to the formation of diverse forms of alternative sovereignty throughout history and up to the present day. Within the framework of a DFG research project, Jan-Henrik Witthaus and his team are investigating such phenomena of "small sovereignty" on the basis of Latin American prose texts in which everyday rulers appear who, in their initially manageable spheres of activity - such as the office or the drug trade - push back the influence of state power and authority.
