Block seminar
Archives and Contemporary art practices Winter semester 2024/25
Course Description
There has been growing attention of archives as a fertile ground to articulate ethical concerns, decolonial initiatives and environmental activisms in art. Aesthetic practices enable to unveil both in
content and materiality other edges of archives, questioning hegemonic narratives and challenging Western sensory assumptions. This course combines discussions of artistic practices and of practical examples.
Therefore, this course will provide a conceptual framework for exploring the potential of such archival practices through critical discussions about interdisciplinarity, art as practice-based research, the place of archives in the articulation between art and political concerns and embodied epistemologies. As a basis for discussion, students will experiment with archives at the Documenta Institut and in discussion with students of the Seminar of Modern and Contemporary Art of the Faculty of Arts and Architecture of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
