The Bachelor's thesis: information and tips

In German Studies, no topic is given for the Bachelor's thesis! The process of finding your own topic is part of the work to be done.
If you have not yet found a topic for your Bachelor's thesis during your studies, ask yourself what has particularly interested you in your previous studies. Which topic would you like to focus on more intensively for the duration of your BA thesis? Once you have identified a topic area, research it, study your documents, go to the library, consult sources and new research literature, talk to lecturers and fellow students. Then develop a specific research question and present it to your supervisor.

Professors and several research assistants from the Department of German Studies may supervise and review the Bachelor's thesis, whereby one of the two supervisors must have the status of a professor. Ask potential first supervisors at an early stage and ideally bring your initial thematic considerations with you.

Check whether you meet all the requirements for registering your Bachelor's thesis. The BA-PO § 12(1) states the following:
"The topic of the Bachelor's thesis will be issued at the beginning of the sixth semester at the earliest. It can only be issued if at least 80 credits in modules of the major subject, 30 credits in modules of the minor subject and 12 credits in the area of key competencies as well as 12 credits for the successful completion of the internship are proven."

If you meet these requirements and have decided on a topic in consultation with your supervisor, you can get started: You register your Bachelor's thesis via the BA Examination Board in the Examinations Office of Faculty 02 (Kurt-Wolters-Straße 5, Room 3003) using the form linked under "Links and Downloads". There are no fixed annual registration periods.
The BA-PO § 12(1) states: "The topic and the appointment of the reviewer who is to supervise the thesis is made by the examination board. The student has the right to make suggestions."

The starting date is the day on which you are notified of the topic (admission). You then have nine weeks to work on it (for exceptions see BA-PO § 11 (4)).
In principle, you work on the topic independently, although advice from your supervisor is possible, e.g. on methodological questions. Please also ask them about the formal rules to be observed (citation etc.), as these are handled differently in German Studies.
The length of your Bachelor's thesis should be approx. 30 pages (line spacing 1.5).
The cover page of your BA thesis should contain information about the university, you, your topic and your reviewers (see sample cover page below). Also remember the obligatory declaration of independence, which you received with your admission letter.
Allow sufficient time at the end for a thorough final proofreading, copying and binding.

Submit three bound written copies of your Bachelor's thesis and an anonymized file to the Examination Office of FB 02 (Kurt-Wolters-Str. 5, Room 3003) by the deadline, in person or by post or at the central mailbox at Mönchebergstraße 19.

The two supervisors will write their reports in the next few weeks. You will be informed of the result in writing by the Examinations Office, and you will arrange the handover of the certificate documents with the Examinations Office. You will also be invited to the FB02 graduation ceremony, where you will receive your certificate.
If you have not submitted your Bachelor's thesis on time or have failed, you can register another attempt with a new topic.
