Breaking the Silence I - The rage of the Mdachi bin Sharifu
an exhibition organised by Kassel Postkolonial, created by Berlin Postkolonial on the end of the German colonial empire 100 years ago
In the late summer of 1919, shortly after Germany's final loss of its colonies, a young East African named Mdachi bin Sharifu appeared in several cities as a speaker on "Our Colonial Past". In Berlin, Cottbus, Erfurt and Hamburg it is the first time that a black man has spoken on this subject. But this is not the only reason why his appearances in a white audience evoke violent reactions. Following the government's repression of a petition by the Afro-German community around Martin Dibobe from Cameroon, Sharifu is now publicly going to court with both the German colonial regime and the continuing colonial racism in Germany.
Based on carefully selected and critically contextualized photographs from the extensive collection of plantation owner Karl Vieweg, which the Embassy of Tanzania provided, the exhibition by Berlin Postkolonial questions the long-lived myth of the colonized's loyalty to the German Empire.
Most parts of the exhibition are in German, some parts are translated into English. Translation into English can be organised (fabi.rosenauer[at]hotmail[dot]de).
