Institute of Urban Development

The Institute for Urban Development (IuE) was founded in 2009 at the University of Kassel and is anchored in the ASL faculty. The institute deals with strategies and proposals for the sustainable development of cities and regions from the perspective of the various disciplines associated with urban planning. It advocates responsible governance and policy in spatial planning and in the monitoring of urban processes.

The institute works on methodological and conceptual issues of spatial development in a global, European, national and regional context.

Research activities and related courses currently focus on planning and building in the post-modern era, sustainability strategies and climate change-related aspects of city-regional developments, the examination of urban cityscapes and the role of small cities – the regiopolises – in the German and European urban system.

Other topics include demographic change and its consequences for spatial organization, spatial development strategies and building in existing buildings or the development of 100% renewable energy regions and the resulting new perspectives for urban and rural areas. Current issues always give rise to offers for projects, student research projects and theses.
