Research

The Department of ARCHITECTURE CITIES ECONOMIES positions itself in three main research questions that are closely related to specific Sustainable Development Goals - especially SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities:

Social Issue - Affordable Housing and Infrastructure; SDG 11.1: Safe and Affordable Housing; SDG 10: Reduced Inequality, especially 10.4: Adopt fiscal and social policies that promote equality, and 8.1: Sustainable economic growth, 9.4: Upgrade all industries and infrastructures for sustainability.
Climate - True cost of climate action; SDG 11; SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy, and 12.2: Sustainable management and use of natural resources.

Participation - Radical democratic project development; SDG 11.3: Enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated, and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries, as well as 12.7: Promote sustainable public procurement practices

In planning: Forum for Social-Ecological Construction and Project Development

The Forum for Social-Ecological Construction and Project Development aims at a fundamental engagement with social and ecological conditions and transformation processes in the construction industry. It is often economic arguments that delay necessary paradigm shifts in the construction industry, or social and ecological demands in construction are declared unrealizable. In contrast, the political-theoretical concept of radical democracy formulates a way of thinking as well as practices of alternatives positioned in terms of democratic politics.[1] Climate crisis and growing social crisis demand radically new concepts and perspectives of social-ecological building industry and project development processes. This includes the critical examination of norms, building regulations, urban development plans, zoning/designation plans, guidelines, and design processes, as these are always in process and the field of tension between practice, political debate, and scientific research. In the context of practice-oriented research, the realization of demonstration projects in the wider region of Kassel is a long-term goal.

The "Forum for Social-Ecological Construction and Project Development" develops sustainable impulses and concepts about constructional quality, sustainable ecology, and fairer distribution of space.

In the international exchange is scheduled in the forum of the global debate on real estate, on the role of the construction industry in the ecosocial crisis to take an active key position in the conversation with actors, responsible as well as Beplanten of the construction industry.

Research focus Prof. Gabu Heindl

In 2022, Gabu Heindl was a lead author in the interdisciplinary research team for the annual assessment-oriented report "APCC SPECIAL REPORT: STRUKTUREN FÜR EIN KLIMAFREUNDLICHES LEBEN“ (Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology) researching building industry implications of social-ecological transformation processes; in 2020, she was commissioned by the Vienna Chamber of Labour for the research project „Gerechte Stadt muss sein". As a member of the "IBA-Wien-2022-Fokusprozess" working group, she was involved in the content of the Vienna International Building Exhibition - "Neues Soziales Wohnen" (2018-19) and in housing research as part of the City of Vienna research project "Working Women Wohnen" (2019-2020). Other research contexts relate to her work in the team for the Third Austrian Building Culture Report commissioned by the Austrian Federal Chancellery (2017-2017), in the context of innovative timber construction research in the überholz postgraduate course (2016 - 2019), and in project developments in the practice of her office. As President of the Austrian Society for Architecture, she was responsible for the program focus "Das Geschäft mit der Stadt" in 2013/2014, among other things.

As Unit Director in the Diploma Program at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, Gabu Heindl's teaching has focused on the public sphere in architecture, particularly housing and real estate in London. As a visiting professor at the University of Sheffield, she was, among other things, part of the research group Commoning, which explored financing and use structures of public spaces; the publication Urban Commons Handbook was published on this in 2022. As a professor of urban planning at the TH Nuremberg, she worked on urban planning and housing policy in the Nuremberg metropolitan region.

Her dissertation "Das andere PPP – Politik, Planung, Popular Agency: Radikaldemokratische Ansätze zu Architektur und Stadtplanung" (2019) is about structural conditions of construction industry and project development on three levels: Politics, Planning and Popular Agency. Thus, all participants* in the construction industry are interconnected on the three levels of action, with planning at the center of the investigation: in the field of tension between, on the one hand, policy measures and, on the other hand, bottom-up initiatives and concrete fields of conflict in relation to socio-ecological urban redevelopment. Since 2022 Gabu Heindl is on the Sounding Board of the Center for New Social Housing at the Vienna University of Technology and International Editor of The Journal of Architecture, journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Radical Democracy in Architecture and Urban Planning

In urban space, politics is made: through gentrification and isolation, through authoritarian security measures, through adaptation to investment interests. And profit is made: with housing shortage, with concrete gold, with urban space as capital investment. Neoliberal governance and right-wing nationalist campaigns make the city a place of fear and scarcity. But what can a politics in the city look like that is oriented towards democracy and solidarity? The concern of this book is an urban planning policy positioned critically to capitalism that acknowledges conflicts and builds alliances.

Stadtkonflikte formulates a radical democratic approach to architecture and urban planning - with a probing look at realized utopias of Red Vienna, through critical illumination of participatory planning, in alliances with social movements. Between political theory, urban planning discourse and intervening practice, the aim is not only to defend spaces and margins of democracy - especially in its crisis - but to expand them.
