City is Forest | Inaugural Lecture Prof. Dr. Verena Brehm (Department of Designing in Urban Contexts)

Cities are complex (eco)systems in which various spatial elements are symbiotically and dynamically interlinked. With each design comes the challenge and the opportunity to enrich the urban context beyond the individual object. Interpreting the city as a forest means designing architecture and districts as habitats in which future-oriented lifestyles can succeed and necessary transformation processes are set in motion.

The Department studies, researches and invents building types, Urban Designs and urban structures for the compact, socially and functionally mixed, multimodally networked, productive, circularly organized and sufficiency-oriented city.

Verena Brehm is an architect and has been Head of the Department of Designing in Urban Contexts since March 2022. She studied Architecture and Urban Design at Leibniz Universität Hannover, TU Berlin and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and completed her doctorate at Leibniz Universität Hannover in 2013. Since 2007, she has been active in research and teaching with stations in Braunschweig, Bremen, Hanover, Kassel and Tübingen. Since its foundation in 2005, she has been a partner in CITYFÖRSTER architecture + urbanism and works on projects at the scale between architecture and Urban Design. Her field of work is urban transformation processes. The focus is on circularly organised, climate-adapted and sufficiency-oriented district developments.

The event will take place in presence, will be recorded and will be available as a video here shortly.
