Rüdiger Faust, born 1963 in Germany, received his Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Dortmund (Diploma thesis: "Synthesis and NMR Spectroscopy of Tetrastannacyclo-hexanes", Professor T. N. Mitchell). He then joined K. Peter C. Vollhardt at the University of California at Berkeley, USA, and was awarded a PhD in Chemistry in 1993 (PhD Thesis: "On the role of Delocalization in Benzene"). 

After a postdoctoral stint with François Diederich at the ETH Zürich, Switzerland, he moved as a lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry to the University of Heidelberg, Germany. In 1998 he accepted an appointment as Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at University College London. In 2003 he moved to the University of Kassel as full professor in Chemistry of Mesoscopic Systems.

Professor Faust has been awarded Kekulé- (1989-1992) and Liebig-fellowships (1995-1996) from the German Chemical Industry Foundation (Fonds der chemischen Industrie) and a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD, 1987-1988). He is a fellow of the German National Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes). Professor Faust is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry as well as the German and the American Chemical Societies
