W - Seed production

The course is a contribution to "Current Topics in Science and Practice" and takes place in the summer semester.

The course is intended to provide participants with the tools to propagate vegetable crops independently in the home garden and to maintain them true to variety. In addition, this introduction to the subject can be a good basis and stimulus to build on it to deal with professional organic seed cultivation and organic plant breeding.

After a theoretical introduction to seed cultivation, the participants work independently in small groups to cultivate a vegetable crop to seed maturity in the teaching and learning garden and discuss this in the plenary session.

In addition to knowledge of pollination conditions, an important basis for pure propagation is  the performance of bonitures and selection, which are carried out in an exemplary manner. Seed processing and cleaning will also be practiced with practical examples after an introduction to seed quality.

The excursion to an organic seed farm rounds off the event and allows insights into professional organic seed production.
