La Via Campesina and the peasant path for systemic change

This lecture is about the history and organization of the global peasant movement La Via Campesina, in which more than 200 million peasants from all continents are organized and of which the Arbeitsgemeinschaft bäuerliche Landwirtschaft (AbL) is one of the founding members. The system-critical and transformative concept of food sovereignty was coined by La Via Campesina in 1996. Food sovereignty quickly became a movement that unites actors from different sectors of society. La Via Campesina has also become a recognized voice for farmers in international and intergovernmental forums. Film clips and other media will be used during the lecture to give participants a
powerful insight into how the global peasant movement organizes itself and develops common positions. In addition, insight into current struggles will be sought during the lecture.
