Nutrition not only influences the general health, growth and well-being of humans and animals, but also has an increasing impact on the environment. Farm animals are particularly criticized for consuming important resources and producing greenhouse gases. Organic farming aims to promote environmentally sustainable, animal-friendly and climate-friendly animal husbandry, and its approaches offer opportunities but also pose challenges for animal nutrition.

This is where the research of the section Environmentally Sustainable Animal Nutrition comes in, developing and researching feeding strategies for livestock such as cattle, pigs and poultry in the context of organic agricultural science. A combination of in vitro and in vivo methods is used to develop and evaluate concepts for environmentally compatible, performance- and animal-friendly nutrition at individual animal and farm level.
