New book on fine mobility published

The Department of Transport Planning and Transport Systems has published a new book in collaboration with the creative studio The Urban Idea GmbH as part of the educational project "Mobility with a human touch - fine mobility for environmental and climate protection, urban quality and quality of life". The title of the book is Feinmobilität - Mehr Nachhaltigkeit durch kleine Fahrzeuge. The project was funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU).

In recent years, there has been a strong trend towards ever larger vehicles for new cars. For many reasons, this is detrimental to both urban and rural areas. This book presents the counter-concept of "fine mobility": This involves the use of small and light means of transportation for passenger and freight transport. An interdisciplinary team offers a comprehensive introduction and classification on the subject of fine mobility, analyzing the current market and the potential uses of these vehicles. It is aimed at city and transport planners, road traffic authorities, scientists, industry and associations.

In addition, the publication shows how the newly developed size classes (G-classes) can be used in practice to optimize traffic regulations and infrastructure measures. It highlights the positive effects of fine mobility on the environment, climate, urban quality and quality of life compared to the current vehicle population. It concludes by outlining ways to promote and spread fine mobility in order to achieve more sustainable and liveable urban mobility.

The book will be published by Oekom-Verlag on 01.10.2024 and is also available as an open-access PDF at: https://www.oekom.de/buch/feinmobilitaet-9783987260988
