The 19th Euroseminar on Microscopy Applied to Building Materials (EMABM) took place in Kassel from May 12 to 15, 2024. This important specialist event attracted 65 participants from various European countries and beyond, once again setting an important example for international scientific exchange in the field of microscopy of building materials.

The conference, which takes place every two years, was last held in Lille (France) and will continue in Helsinki (Finland) in 2026. In Kassel, the focus was on a wide-ranging scientific program that spanned three days. Participants had the opportunity to attend a variety of lectures and poster presentations covering the latest research findings and technological developments in the field of microscopy of building materials.

The conference began on Sunday, May 12, with a specialized workshop on cement clinker microscopy. This workshop offered participants, especially young scientists, an intensive introduction to the examination and analysis of clinker, an essential component of cement. Experienced experts led practical exercises and theoretical lectures, providing participants with valuable knowledge and skills in this specialized field of microscopy.

In the further course of the conference, topics included the investigation of microstructures in concretes and mortars, the analysis of corrosion processes and innovative methods for characterizing building materials using light, scanning electron and X-ray microscopy and many other microscopic methods. The analysis of the microscopy data collected, including using AI, was another focus. Renowned scientists from various countries shared their findings and presented their latest research results, which led to lively discussions and valuable networking opportunities.

In addition to the intensive scientific exchange, the conference also offered participants the opportunity to get to know the cultural highlights of Kassel. An excursion took the participants to the Löwenburg and the Herkules Building, both of which are important sights in the region.

The Hercules structure, a monumental landmark and part of the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, was examined in particular with regard to its construction and restoration. These excursions not only offered the participants a change from the scientific program, but also the opportunity to experience the historical and cultural diversity of Kassel.

The 19th Euroseminar on Microscopy Applied to Building Materials in Kassel was a great success and contributed significantly to the promotion of scientific exchange and the further development of microscopy of building materials. The conference provided an excellent platform for the exchange of the latest research results and the networking of experts from all over Europe and beyond. The combination of a challenging scientific program and a varied cultural program made this event an enjoyable experience for all participants.
