In the 6th and / or 7th semester professional practical studies / engineering internship
For all those who have struggled through the procedures of a previously normal course of study until the 6th semester, now comes the ultimate something different studying civil engineering / environmental engineering / -innen education of the University of Kassel.
12 weekspractical application of all what was offered in the above only partly listed lectures so far.
Whether in engineering offices, government agencies, offices, construction companies or other industries in which civil engineers are active, here you will be confronted over 12 weeks with the everyday and sometimes previously unknown areas of activity of the future professional field.
Often, during the first five semesters, a vague idea of the so-called specialization of the civil and environmental engineering education has already crystallized. Be it in the field of construction operation and management, structural engineering, traffic or water.

For the choice of your suitable engineering practice place you are free from any possible pre-determinations or inclinations. Of course, the so-called statics freak would like to prove himself in the statics office for 12 weeks, but since he/she will or must possibly do this for a whole professional career, you should also think about a so-called alternative internship in one of the many other construction domains with regard to the engineering internship. How would it be for example times with the construction management or with the one or other authority, in which later a not exactly small number of the occupation colleagues will find themselves anyway.

Be that as it may, in the 5th semester at the latest we will talk to each other and discuss our ideas, doubts and sometimes even fears regarding the upcoming 12 weeks of trial and error.
Only one thing can be said at this point for consolation: Nobody has ever failed the engineering internship and even the so-called ideal/wrong choice of an internship ultimately always includes the realization that this or that area of civil/environmental engineering does or does not correspond to personal inclinations and ideas.

To ensure that no one is overwhelmed by the sometimes unmanageable flood of internship options when choosing an internship, and because the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has anchored this engineering internship in its module handbooks and its diploma examination regulations as a study option accompanied and supervised by the department, there is the Department for Professional Practical Studies, or the BPS Department for short.
