DSpace-CRIS was developed in 2009 by CINECA in cooperation with the University of Hong Kong. CINECA is the largest Italian centre for scientific IT services, operating as a public corporation based on an association of Italian universities, the National Research Council (CNR) Italy and the Italian Ministry of Education (MI-UR) (http://www.cineca.it/en).

In 2015, the technology spin-off 4Science srl. was founded out of CINECA and since then has been accompanying the dynamics and international development of DSpace-CRIS as a private company. Since 2022, 4Science has been operating as a public limited company. 4Science S.p.A. is part of the Itway Group (https://www.itway.com/en/).

4Science employs the key people from the DSpace-CRIS development team, is active in the international DSpace community, secures the open source model in the long term and is involved in standardisation processes for research information (cerif, CASRAI, COAR Working Group on "Next Generation Repositories").
