Migrants, Work and Identity: A Study in Mumbai

From time to time various studies have been done in different industries and section of migrant labourers in Mumbai. As Mumbai is the city of migrants and in every era of time, there is flow of migrant labourers from different categories and different states. The informal sector in Mumbai constitutes a variety of activities ranging from small commercial activities to small production and service enterprises which require skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labourers. However, there is need to do a study that focuses on the migrant workers from U.P. in the present day complex social and political context. Discrimination and marginalisation can be experienced in everyday work and living environments. There is a substantive degree of subjectivity in experiences of discrimination by individuals and communities. Therefore, it is important to do a study of this nature. The study will explore the links between identity, and different experiences of the migrant in Mumbai city, their expectation from the city, and concerns with work and employment. It could focus on migrants from Uttar Pradesh who are engaged in specific types of work. For instance, there are large numbers of taxi drivers in the city. Such occupational category could be the focus for the purpose of the study.

The study will be exploratory in nature. Mixed methodology will be used to integrate both qualitative and quantitative methods in the research. However, quantitative method could be utilized to gain background information about the migrants in specific occupational category from Uttar Pradesh. Subsequently, through multiple methods like in-depth interviews, case study, and group discussions, a detailed understanding would be obtained about socio-economic, political and cultural life of migrants in context of Mumbai. Secondarydata will be collected from archives, census data, NSSO reports, academic literature etc.
