HIGHSTEPS - High Coverage Sustainable Thermal Energy Provision Systems for Industry

Brief description

Although heat pumps and solar thermal collectors are key technologies for the heat transition, there is a lack of clear design and operating strategies for their combined use if high coverage rates are to be achieved. In view of the climate targets, the supply of only the base load is not sufficient. Therefore, regenerative heat supply concepts for industrial temperatures up to 150 °C including methods and design guidelines for feasibility assessment are developed. In the context of case studies and based on existing measurement data, algorithm-based characteristics of waste heat sources are derived, which provide important input for the feasibility assessment of heat pump projects. In addition to design and control, the choice of hydraulics is central, for which there are no quantitative selection guidelines yet, but which will be elaborated in the context of the project using a variety of system simulations. For this purpose, an easy-to- use model for the simulation of HPs, which correctly represents the operating behavior outside the design conditions, will be developed. The validation will be based on manufacturer and measurement data of the implementation scientifically accompanied within the project. HEWI GmbH will extend its cooling capacity by installing two integrated heat pumps and will cover a large part of the heat demand by accompanying optimization measures. Further implementations will be initiated by the consortium. Finally, the results are summarized in an easy-to-use tool that allows users to perform a simple feasibility assessment of heat supply systems with high RE coverage rates. The main content will be the findings on waste heat profiles as well as the methodology for forecasting hourly load profiles developed in the project. In this context, the information portal www.solare-prozesswärme.info will be extended to a more general website on RE heat supply systems in industry and commerce.
